Pimento Jar

So while I was growing up my mother had this pimento jar, empty pimento jar mind you, that sat on our window seal above the kitchen sink. I didn't know why it was always there next to the Princess House crystal glass holding white sand from White Sands New Mexico, but there it was day in and day out, empty.... We didn't have a working dish washer when I was a child because ours had broken years before and so I often saw the pimento jar as I washed a dish or got a drink, cause God Forbid, people actually drank tap water back then. The jar was small and clear and it had a blue lid with an orange stripe....

Some things never change I guess. I have NEVER cooked anything with pimentos in it before last week, and in fact I didnt even buy the pimentos for the recipe I made, my wonderful husband did. But wouldn't yah know it, the jar he brought home was small and clear and had an, you guessed it, orange stripe. For some reason I couldn't throw it away, weird yes, nutty maybe, but none the less there it sits on the ledge above my kitchen sink....

Today, we used it as a jar for cleaning paint brushes, later who knows, but I think Ill just keep it a while cause I seem to want it for some reason....

That's so neat, Cyndee! Have you ever asked your mom why she kept hers on the sill? I like reading this blog. We don't have to have reasons for what we do sometimes, when it comes to holding sentimental values. There are so many things like this I have done in rememberance to my brother and my grandmother. I realize it's different here with this jar, but nonetheless, special. ;) I think you should ask your mom about hers. And then write it. I see the story being written in a Chicken Soup for The Soul book. :)
Thanks for sharing!

What a strange coincidence that I, too, have empty jars on my windowsill above my sink. Currently, one is an empty Olive Garden dressing jar (from last Mother's Day!) and the other is one of those pineapple/cheese spread jars from years ago. I did have a canning jelly jar and Boyd's Bear apple butter jar there, but they've moved to the right of the windowsill on the countertop. I'm pretty sure my 'habit' here is a carry over from my grandmother~and I've used mine for paintbrushes, too! Unbelievable. :)

We all need those things that bring us back to "home" once in awhile! :)

Hey- how come you guys never comment on my blog? I guess I'm not as witty as Cyndee LOL ;o)

Found this while googling a recipe with pimentos, trying to duplicate something my Granny used to make - this is such a sweet story.

My dad tells a story someone in the family cooking pot roast for the first time after he moved away from home, and reading his mom's instructions, which told him to cut the end off of the roast. He called her to ask why, and she wasn't sure. That was how her mother had taught her to do it. So, she called *her* mother, who told her "my pan was too short".

Don't know if it's true, but it seemed to fit so nicely with your story that I wanted to share it, and thank you for making me smile! :)
